"BASS PLAYERS UNITED" Album Review
"Andy Saxton’s ‘Evolution of the Thumb’ is the first solo album by the former member of little known London rockers New Device, and what an album it is! His playing displays such a high level of skill and panache that it seems to proudly proclaim Saxton’s desire to join the ranks of uber-bassists such as Wooten, Berlin and co, and with forthwith effect!’
There’s a huge sense of accomplishment to this disc. From the moment the opening title track begins you are aware that you are listening to a player of great dexterity and skill, one who pings and pops with speed, flourish and aplomb. The bulk of the song structures are unashamedly derived from the Metal genre. Tunes such as ‘Harlequin’ and ‘Labyrinth’ are reminiscent of a Metallica album with the vocal tracks erased (which, some might argue, would be an improvement). There’s a force and drive to his playing that pushes the listener along with it. However, that’s not to say the album lacks variety. ‘Tom Thumb’ is a flurry of activity, utilizing super-fast thumb action and tastefully placed harmonics. The funky motif to ‘Streamer’ could almost be Mark King, while ’Echo Falls’, with its early Human League style backing track, is a marvelously melodic piece.
From a forerunner perspective, Saxton’s playing most resembles that of Stu Hamm, with its high tone, complex, super-fast chord picking, and gritty rock sensibilities.
Saxton is a highly skilled bassist who clearly plays like a demon. ‘Evolution of the Thumb’ dazzles at every turn. He is a major new talent and – as an advertisement of his abilities – this album is less a post office postcard and more a West End department store window display. A name to watch (and listen to) going forward."
